There are plenty of challenges when applying outside digital signage but despite this more and more electronic screens are being built out to take advantage of the higher audience numbers these outside digital advertising screens can create. While the most obvious obstacle for taking a commercial grade LCD display outside is protecting it from the weather, and in particular rainfall, the problems connected with the sunlight can be equally as difficult to overcome. The issue with the sunlight and outdoor electronic signage is the direct sunlight will frequently create the screen unreadable. Not only can sunlight cause glare (you must know what that is like when you try and see the TV at home throughout the summer months where very often you are forced to shut the curtain to watch the screen clearly) but even when there is absolutely no glare in bright sunlight the screen will look dim and difficult to see. But there are methods to ensure the screen is as readable as you can when taken outdoors:
Brightness
Ensuring you have the cleverest type of screen possible will go along way to ensuring the screen is readable. The minimum screen brightness for any outside LCD display should be 800 nits but LCD using 1000+ nits are available and must be taken into account when looking to get into external electronic signage. It should also be noted that in general commercial screens have higher nit values and are better suited to outdoor signage displays.
Anti-glare technologies
Preventing glare is accomplished in a number of ways. Regrettably, whichever way you select that there probably will be some drop-off in brightness. Direct sunlight can cause more problems than just glare too. Display burn can grow if the sun is constantly on it so either the outside digital screen should be turned away from the sun or some other remedy to protect against this screen burn should be considered such as warming the screen .
A great deal of content which works well in indoor locations does not respond well to be taken outdoors. Use colours and designs which are more notable in outdoor locations. There is frequently a lot of trial and error involved with this but assess what works and what does not and you should soon develop a flare for designing material that is suitable for outdoor electronic signage.
